What is a Backdraft Damper?

A Backdraft Damper is one of several pieces in a ventilation system that is essential in helping your system work properly. To ensure healthy, quality air, the backdraft damper helps regulate the airflow throughout each room. It is designed to allow contaminated air to flow out while it is also intended to prevent contaminated air from recycling back in. The dampers are made of high-quality aluminum and thoroughly checked to meet all standards.

Backdraft dampers also help rid unwanted odors and stale air that would otherwise linger. This may include fumes and vapors in various work areas. Backdraft dampers help increase the air quality while reducing health risks for workers in these conditions.

How Does a Backdraft Damper Work?

The Basics

A backdraft damper can let contaminated airflow in one direction. Once the air is outside, the damper then closes to keep the contaminated air from cycling back in. These dampers are designed to close by gravity; opening and closing by velocity and pressure. Other dampers are designed to open and close by a motor.

Opening the Damper Blades

A backdraft damper is positioned in the duct system its specially designed blades are what allow air to flow in only one direction. In order for the blades to open, backdraft dampers may use any one of the below three options:

  • Motor packs may be utilized when the opening and closing of the damper blades cannot rely on the air pressure or velocity.
  • Counterbalance weights that are adjustable offer the most precision. They can reduce the amount of pressure necessary to open the backdraft damper.

Additional Benefits

Utilizing a backdraft damper not only keeps the contaminated air from coming in, but also keeps the cold winter air out as well. Backdraft dampers help prevent backdrafts while ridding hot air from various heating sources. This is a valuable benefit by significantly improving the airflow in areas of concern including an attic, chimney, laundry facility, or furnace room.

The dampers are quiet, and efficient, and come in various sizes to meet your system’s needs. Installing a backdraft damper on a propeller fan will serve as a preventative to wind forcing the fan to run backwards if the power is off.
